PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Disability Law Center has opened an investigation into the February death of a resident at a state-run group home for adults with developmental disabilities.

The law center’s supervising attorney said the center contacted residents and requested access to records.

The Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Development Disabilities and Hospitals which operates the College Park Apartments has said the home will close by March 25.

The decision to close the group home comes after multiple reports of suspected abuse of residents in addition to the resident’s death. According to the department, BHDDH led an internal investigation into the facility before passing the findings along to the Office of the Attorney General and the RI State Police for further review.

The 14 residents will be moved to new homes beforehand.
