JAMESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority has announce it will be closing the high speed lanes on the Newport Pell Bridge starting next week.
The lanes will be shut down so new hardware and digital infrastructure in order to update the tolling apparatus on the bridge. Closures are expected to begin on Monday, March 28 and last until Wednesday, April 13. However, the installation of equipment will be dependent on the weather. Officials say drivers should expect delays, especially during the morning and evening commutes.
RITBA says the upgraded toll collection system includes new cameras, lasers, updated software, and other tools to provide more accurate reads of E-ZpPass transponders and license plates.The new toll collection system will provide a more secure and efficient method for storing data, staging for future upgrades, and a more reliable system for disaster recovery in the event of a major incident or natural disaster.
