PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Federal Bureau of Investigation is digging for a body behind an old mill building in Providence, the Target 12 Investigators have confirmed.
Kristen Setera, a spokesperson for the agency’s Boston office, confirmed Tuesday that investigators are working in the area of Branch Avenue and Woodward Road. She would not comment on what investigators are looking for, but did say there was not threat to public safety.
Sources tell Target 12 investigators are looking for human remains and the suspects in the case have ties to organized crime.
A neighbor who lives near the dig site said investigators arrived Wednesday around 8 a.m.
An Eyewitness News crew on scene spotted more than one dozen investigators using a backhoe to dig behind an industrial building.
The location of the dig is behind a mill building that was raided by federal investigators for an illegal pot growing operation.
The mill is owned by William Ricci who agreed to plead guilty in the case.
There is no indication the drug case is related to the FBI dig. A spokesperson for the Rhode Island U.S. Attorney’s office would not comment.
