PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A former tax preparer from Cranston has been indicted by a federal grand jury on 70 counts in alleged schemes to prepare false tax returns.
Authorities say Belkis M. Guzman, 47, was employed at El Centro Multiservices in Providence when he readied those false returns with deductions taxpayers were not entitled to, and with the personal information of other without their permission. Investigators say the false tax returns resulting in more than $685,000 in tax refunds, which were deposited into an account Guzman controlled.
Guzman faces a laundry list of charges including:
- 33 counts of preparing false income tax returns
- 8 counts of wire fraud
- 4 counts of aggravated identity theft
- 23 counts of forgery
- 1 count of theft of government funds
He was scheduled to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Providence on April 4.
