COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) – Police and firefighters responded to a Benny’s store in Coventry Friday afternoon after store employees received a suspicious envelope in the mail.

According to police, it happened a few minutes after 3 p.m. at the Benny’s at 495 Tiogue Avenue. Store management found a “suspicious, white, powdery substance” inside an envelope.

Police said nobody was exposed to the substance and there were no reports of illness, but the Department of Environmental Management and several fire departments responded, including several units from the area’s regional HAZMAT team.

The envelope was sent to the DEM for testing.

Police said it wasn’t the first time this week that a store had received white powder in the mail; on Monday a local business owner reported that he’d been mailed a baggy containing a similar substance. That envelope was tested by DEM and did not actually contain any dangerous materials.
