PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence police officer was injured Wednesday night after his cruiser was struck near the intersection of Eddy Street and Willard Avenue.

According to Lt. Roger Aspinall, officers were investigating the report of a stolen car in the area when the cruiser was hit by the car in question.

Aspinall said the officer had to be freed from the cruiser and was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with back and neck pain.

The car fled the scene then struck another car in the area of Eddy Street and Allens Avenue. One person was also injured in that crash and was taken to the hospital, according to Aspinall.

The suspect, 24-year-old Stephano Black of Providence, was taken into custody following the second crash. Investigators said the car Black was driving was stolen.

He is expected to be arraigned later Thursday morning.
