Driver facing felony charges in crash that injured police officer

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man faced a judge Thursday on charges he caused a pair of crashes that injured two people, including a city police officer.

According to police, Stephano Black was arrested late Wednesday night following a crash near the intersection of Eddy Street and Allens Avenue.

Prior to that crash, police said Black struck a police cruiser at the intersection of Eddy Street and Willard Avenue and fled the scene. The officer inside was extricated from the cruiser and taken to the hospital with back and neck pain.

Police said officers were in the area looking for a stolen car. As it turned out, prosecutors allege the car driven by Black was stolen.

One person also suffered minor injuries in the second crash and was transported to the hospital.

Black, 24, was arraigned Thursday on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in injury, reckless operation, and driving a stolen vehicle, as well as a misdemeanor charge of operating without a license. He was held on $50,000 bail.

Prosecutors say Black has served time in the past for narcotics and driving a stolen vehicle.

The officer, identified as Vincent Lopez, has been released from the hospital.
