Police: stabbing outside Providence bar involved patrons

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police are searching for a suspect following an early morning stabbing on Saturday.

According to Providence police, it happened at about 1:30pm outside Fat Belly’s Pub on Canal Street. A 24 year-old man was stabbed several times in the stomach after being involved in a fight inside the club.

Lt. Luis San Lucas told Eyewitness News that the victim and several friends were involved in a fight with another group of people inside. Security broke it up and ejected everyone involved. The fight continued when they all got outside, culminating in the stabbing.

San Lucas said three people were apprehended, but not the person suspected of stabbing the victim.

Major David Lapatin said that the police department called for an emergency hearing of the Providence Board of Licenses to make a motion to close the bar temporarily, but not enough of the board members were available to hold it.

Saturday morning, the pub’s owner told Eyewitness News that the stabbing occurred in a parking lot nearby, which the pub does not own or manage, and that it was not related to his establishment.
