NORTH SMITHFIELD, R.I. (WPRI) — A police K9 in North Smithfield has been awarded a stab and bullet proof vest.

According to the police department, Chiko, a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, was awarded the vest on Monday.

Chiko, who is handled by Officer Jay Rainville, is certified in patrol work, which includes tracking, criminal apprehension, handler protection, evidence recovery and narcotics detection.

Chiko was awarded the ballistic vest thanks to the charitable nonprofit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. The vest is sponsored by Lincolnwood Training Club for German Shepherd Dogs of Chicago, IL.

Vested Interest is located in East Taunton, Massachusetts, and the company’s mission is to provide ballistic vests and other assistance to law enforcement dogs.

The program is open to all dogs actively employed with law enforcement or related agencies, who are certified and are at least 20 months of age.

Each vest has a value of between $1,795 and $2,234 and comes with a five-year warranty.
