NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — One of the two types of mosquitoes known to transmit the Zika Virus has been detected in New Bedford in recent years.
According to the Bristol County Mosquito Control, the mosquito, commonly referred to as an Asian Tiger Mosquito, has been detected in the city since 2009.
Experts say the mosquitoes as drawn to an abundance of loose tires in and around the city – and they’re active during the day unlike any other type of mosquitoes with a population of about 200.
According to experts, the chance of transmitting Zika from these mosquitoes is extremely unlikely.
