Ringling Bros. elephants enjoy lunch outside Dunkin Donuts Center

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus was in Providence Thursday.

The circus hosted an event in front of the Dunkin Donuts Center showcasing the circus’ performing elephants eating a feast.

The elephants will be phased out of the show later this year. Ringling Bros. made the decision in response to a movement led by animal-rights activists, which has changed public attitudes toward performing animals.

The animals will live at the company’s 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation in central Florida.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals – PETA – says the change to take elephants out of performances does not do enough.

PETA is planning a protest at 10 a.m. Saturday outside the Dunk.
