Police find loaded gun in search of unregistered vehicle

CENTRAL FALLS, R.I. (WPRI) — A Pawtucket man was arrested after police found a loaded weapon in his car during a traffic stop in Central Falls.

According to police, officers patrolling the area of Pine and Richardson Streets spotted a blue Nissan with no front license plate and the rear plate hanging off the vehicle at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The officers pulled over the vehicle after checking the registration and learning the plate didn’t match.

Police said the driver, identified as Gregory Fortunado, had a suspended driver’s license. The officers also noted a strong smell of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Police checked the vehicle’s identification number and discovered it was not registered. In searching the vehicle, the officers found a loaded, semi-automatic Ruger .380 in the glove box, according to police.

The vehicle was impounded and Fortunado was placed under arrest.

Fortunado, 21, was arraigned Thursday on charges of license/permit required for carrying a pistol, loaded weapon in a vehicle, and driving with a suspended license. His bail was set at $5,000 with surety.
