TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) – A fast-moving fire seriously damaged a home on Bulgamarsh Road Wednesday afternoon.

A man in his 60s, who lived at the home, called 911 when the flames started around 4 p.m.

Firefighters arrived on the scene to heavy flames coming from the basement.

Tiverton Fire Chief Robert Llloyd says, “The house is in condition where a lot of people try to keep a lot of belongings, just a lot of material, a lot of items that had been saved in the house for years.”

Firefighters got the resident to safety as they worked to knock down the flames; they got it under control in about 20 minutes.

Firefighters from Portsmouth, Middletown, Westport, Dartmouth, and Fall River were called in to help.

“Thank God for mutual aid” says Chief Lloyd.

The Chief says the house is a total loss, because flames in the basement weakened the first floor of the home.

“Our fire marshal is looking at the cause of the fire, somewhere in the basement, and that’s what he’s looking at right now.” says Chief Lloyd.

The resident was not hurt and will be staying with family members.
