FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) – A man has died after a two-alarm house fire in Fall River Sunday morning.

The fire broke out around 6 a.m. at 212 Covel Street. Firefighters took an injured man out of a third-floor apartment, but police said he died a short time later at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Mandy Medeiros, who lives across the street from the home that burned, said the victim was a man in his 60s. Neighbors said he had lived in the home for more than 40 years and usually kept to himself, but always smiled at those he saw on the street.

Medeiros said the fire has her and others on edge because it is the third blaze in the same two-block radius in just two weeks time.

“It looked like the smoke was coming from the third floor and the flames as well,” Medeiros said. “Scared for myself, my family, for our own homes because we don’t want it to happen to us.”

On April 27, a house one block away on County Street was charred in a fire. Another two blocks away, a triple-decker home on Canonicus Street was destroyed by fire just two days ago.

The cause of the fire on Covel Street remains under investigation. Workers said the home is completely gutted by both fire and water damage.
