NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — At least four stores in Southeastern Massachusetts have been robbed in the past two weeks by a suspect wielding a stun gun, and investigators believe the crimes may be connected.
No one has been injured as a result of the incidents, but many clerks are now worried for their safety. One said he plans to buy mace and new security cameras.
“The guy came in with a black shirt, black gloves, with the mask, and with a stun gun and knife,” said Robin Ahmad at Brock Avenue Variety in New Bedford.
Ahmad said his cousin was working at his store last week when the armed suspect ran in at closing time. The man made off with hundreds of dollars.
It was a similar scene just three days earlier at Jackson’s Variety Store on Sconticut Neck Road in Fairhaven.
“They’re activating the device in a manner similar to that to intimidate the person behind the counter,” said Fairhaven Police Sgt. Kevin Kobza as he demonstrated with a similar stun gun.
Two other robberies involving a similar suspect were reported recently. The first was on May 11 at One Stop Gas in New Bedford and the most recent was Monday night at Prime Energy on Rockdale Avenue.
“Same description of the weapon, same description of the suspect,” Kobza said. ‘The same manner, behavior. Pretty much the same MO.”
Kobza is working together with New Bedford police to try and uncover the suspect’s identity. He said the suspect will face armed robbery charges.
“Even if you are a licensed gun holder, you cannot possess a stun gun,” he added. “This type of behavior is obviously very reckless. It’s high risk and hopefully, nobody does get hurt.”
Anyone who witnessed suspicious activity around the time of the robberies or has any information about the suspect is asked to call the Fairhaven Police Department at (508) 997-7421 or the New Bedford Police Department at (508) 991-6300.
