Bus erupts in flames outside Breakers mansion

NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — A bus full of people touring the Newport mansions went up in flames in the parking lot of The Breakers Thursday morning.

According to Newport Deputy Fire Chief Drew Elder, fire crews arrived to find the tour bus fully involved just after 9:15 a.m.

Elder said no passengers were on board and the bus driver was present when members of the fire department arrived.

Fire crews was able to extinguish the fire and keep it from spreading to nearby vehicles.

Officials said crews at the scene vented the windows and hoses were used to knock down the flames. Once the fire was under control, luggage belonging to the passengers were removed from the storage areas on the bus and turned over to the Newport Police Department.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
