Taunton police officer saves family from house fire

TAUNTON, Mass. (WPRI) — A woman, her young son, and their dog are all safe thanks to the heroic actions of a Taunton police officer.

The fire started around 10 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Longmeadow Road. According to police, Officer Jeff Danner spotted an unusual amount of smoke coming from the rear of the home and knocked on the front and side doors, but there was no answer.

Danner then went around back, kicked in the door, and found the woman coming downstairs. Police said he alerted her to the fire and the two went upstairs to get her 9-year-old boy and family dog, a shih tzu.

The Taunton deputy fire chief said the rear part of the two-story home sustained the heaviest damage and has been deemed uninhabitable. Meanwhile, the family is staying with relatives.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
