PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Vice President Joe Biden will make a rare visit to Rhode Island Friday.
According to Gov. Gina Raimondo’s Office, VP Biden will speak at the Rhode Island Department of Transportation facility in East Providence. Eyewitness News has learned Raimondo made a pitch for Biden to visit the Ocean State months ago in person to the White House.
Biden’s visit on Friday will highlight the state’s RhodeWorks infrastructure program.
“Vice President Biden recognized for many years the evolving crises and how to properly fund it,” said Peter Alviti, director of RIDOT.
RhodeWorks became law in February. Its intent is to toll large commercial trucks to pay for repairs to the state’s crumbling roads and bridges.

“With RhodeWorks here in Rhode Island, we’ve solved – I think once and for all – a transportation infrastructure crisis,” Alviti said.
Biden is a big supporter of infrastructure – and he made it one of the focuses of his time in the White House.
“I think, and I’m hoping when he comes, that he’ll be pleased with the outcome here,” Alviti said. “I think it’s an outcome that can play out in many other states across the country.”
