SEEKONK, Mass. (WPRI) – Seekonk dedicated a new memorial to the town’s veterans Saturday.
It was the culmination of years of effort from veterans, who ran into problems with the board of directors for the town’s library refused to approve their initial plans because they thought the library, which owns the land on which the memorial sits, might need that land for possible expansion.
But a compromise was reached for a smaller memorial, and the dedication took place at noon on Saturday.
The memorial honors all those Seekonk residents who have served in the military.
The town also held its annual Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. The parade started at Seekonk High School and ended at the new memorial.
“Veterans Day is approaching,” said Bob De Fontes, Vice Chairman of the Building Committee of Seekonk. “We will definitely have a celebration here Veterans Day. This will be a place of honor for all the veterans, every single day.”
