NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – A 49-year-old New Bedford man was killed Monday afternoon after the car he was working on fell on top of him, crushing him.
Police responded to the scene in the area of Walnut Street and Acushnet Avenue at 4pm.
The man was underneath the Honda Accord which had been supported by a hydraulic lift jack and two portable jack stands.
Police say at some point, it appears one of the jacks gave way and the car came down on top of him.
He was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The car was not his and it’s not known what kind of repairs the man was making.
The incident remains under investigation but police say it does not appear to be suspicious at this time.
