CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Cranston Police were searching a neighborhood near Pontiac Avenue around 9 p.m. Saturday night after multiple reports of a black bear sighting.

Reports on social media said the bear was reported in the areas of Mapleton Street and Forest Avenue close to Pontiac Avenue.

Eyewitness News spoke to residents of the neighborhood who said they saw a black bear climb a tree on South Clarendon Street. Police searched the area but found nothing.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says black bears are rarely aggressive towards people, but police are cautioning residents to stay away from the bear if they see it.
