LOS ANGELES (WPRI) — The sci-fi movie that Robert Redford recently shot in Rhode Island will be released by Netflix next year.

The streaming service has acquired worldwide distribution rights to “The Discovery,” Variety reported Monday. The film will premiere on Netflix and also be shown in select theaters.

According to Variety, “The Discovery” is about a scientist (Redford) who proves the existence of an afterlife. The film also stars Jason Segel and Rooney Mara. Rhode Island native Erika Hampson is a producer on the project.

The film crew shot scenes in Newport earlier this year. Redford, who previously filmed “The Great Gatsby” in Newport, thanked the city in a letter sent to the Newport Daily News.
