Bill would add interest to delayed refund checks

PROVIDENCE (WPRI) — One Rhode Island lawmaker wants taxpayers still waiting for their tax refunds to be paid interest on their outstanding payments.

Rep. Doreen Costa has drafted a bill that would require the state to pay interest to any taxpayer who doesn’t get a refund by June 30.

Under the proposal, interest would be paid to those taxpayers at a rate of 12% for each day the refunds are late.

The state has said it is working on getting those payments out and claims the problems stem from new computer systems and taxpayer errors.
