Police arrest suspect in New Bedford stabbing

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — New Bedford police on Tuesday arrested a man accused of stabbing another man, leaving him in serious condition.

According to police, Arthur Ostiguy was found walking in the area of Shawmut Avenue and Hathaway Road.

Ostiguy, 43, is charged with stabbing a 50-year-old New Bedford man in the abdomen and left forearm at about 3:30 p.m. Monday in the area of Nauset Street.

After stumbling into a nearby fast food restaurant, police said the victim was transported to Rhode Island Hospital, where he remains in serious condition.

Police said Ostiguy was identified through witness statements and video surveillance.

Both the suspect and the victim are homeless and police said a motive has not yet been determined.

Ostiguy is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday on charges of assault with intent to murder and battery by means of a dangerous weapon.
