SOMERSET, Mass. (WPRI) — A man whom Somerset police say hay a lengthy criminal record was arrested against Thursday night, after police said he fought with an officer.
According to Somerset police, Officer Dan Williams spotted Jose “JJ” Almeida and pulled him over, intending to arrest him on several outstanding warrants. Police said Williams got pulled into Almeida’s car while trying to stop Almeida from reaching for something, and a fight ensued inside the car. Police said people nearby called 911, saying the officer needed help.
Police Chief George McNeil explained to us later that being pulled inside of a car is often an officer’s worst nightmare. “There’s a chance he could get your firearm and use it on you,” said McNeil. “This is probably the most frightening experience you can have as a police officer.”
Police said two K-9 units responded, and once they got there they were able to subdue the suspect. The K-9s then searched the car, and police said they found 40 bags of heroin hidden in the center console.
In addition to the outstanding warrants, Almeida is now facing charges of assaulting a police officer and drug trafficking.
