WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Wednesday marked the last day of class for Warwick schools and the last time two of the city’s schools will be open to students.

As part of a major school consolidation plan, Gorton and Aldrich Junior High Schools won’t be reopening when classes resume at the end of August. Instead, students from those schools not moving on to high school will be attending Veterans Junior High School. Vets will no longer be a high school.

Eyewitness News was at Aldrich Junior High School Wednesday and staff there seemed sad as the final hours ticked away on the school.

Principal John Livsey, who was actually a student at Aldrich in the 70’s, said the day was tough because he has known the school for so long.

“It’s especially bittersweet for myself [and] another teacher in the building Ms. Chaplan,” he said.

“[She] was also a student here a little after me but it’s been interesting. The schools’ been here for 80 years and this is going to be the final – the final day of classes.”
