Following apparent drowning, East Greenwich boy remembered as model student

EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WPRI) — Classmates of a little boy found floating face down in a residential swimming pool over the weekend are spending their last days of school before summer vacation remembering their friend.

The incident happened Saturday on Bow Street, off of Middle Road.

Police said there were a lot of people at the home at the time of the incident but right now, they said the boy’s death appears to be a “tragic accident.”

The 7-year-old boy, who police did not identify, was a student at Meadowbrook Elementary School.

His principal, Neil Marcaccio, released the following statement regarding the accident:

“Our community experienced the loss of a student that expected so little and gave so much to his classmates, teachers and family.  Our hearts go out to his family, classmates and all those whose lives he touched. This young man was exactly the type of person that comes to mind when we talk about a model student. He exemplified not only academic curiosity, success, and the ability to teach others, but a gentle kindness and growth mindset that was admired and absorbed by all those around him. He had one of those auras that you simply knew would take him places and lead to great things. Even in the midst of this tragedy, his own classmates were focused on remembering him by sharing memories and enjoying their last school days together…the way he would have wanted it to be. His capacity and kindness will certainly live on within our school community.”
