PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Two charities started by Vincent “Buddy” Cianci are merging into one in hopes of keeping the late mayor’s memory alive.
Cianci’s nephew, Dr. Brad Turchetta, said the family is combining the “Vincent A. Cianci Scholarship Fund” and the “Vincent A. Cianci Library and Research Center” into the Cianci Educational Foundation.
“Out of our family’s great personal loss, and our community’s great public loss, great opportunity has presented itself,” Turchetta said.
A Tuesday night reception was planned to highlight the organization’s new mission: “The Cianci Educational Foundation is dedicated to assist those in Rhode Island that strive to achieve continuing education through college scholarships and additionally to further enhance the educational spirit of arts, economy, urban development, health care, and politics through sponsorship support.”
The foundation plans to award $48,500 in scholarships and grants at the reception. Fourteen scholarship recipients will each receive $1,000 toward their first year of college. In addition, the following organizations will receive sponsorships for various efforts.
- Anthony Quinn Foundation
- Junior Achievement of Rhode Island
- Federal Hill Commerce Association
- Providence Performing Arts Center
- Women and Infants Hospital
- Providence Preservation Society
