Police: Gunman attempted to rob customers during Craigslist meeting

PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) – Providence police are searching for a gunman they say lured his victims over Craigslist.

Police say the victim was found with an injury to his head caused by a pellet gun or small caliber firearm. The incident took place around 11 p.m. on Transit Street.

The victim and his wife told police they had driven up from New York to purchase a car when the suspect tried to rob them. Police say the couple was guided over the phone by the suspect to an area where the attempted robbery occurred.

“To meet someone at these locations of driveways or residences when you’re not familiar with the area is very, very dangerous,” said Deputy Chief Thomas Oates of the Providence Police Department.

As of right now, it is unclear if the suspect lives in the neighborhood or if he fled in a vehicle. Police are checking for any potential security cameras that may have captured the incident.
