Police investigating after body found behind Tiverton home

TIVERTON, R.I. (WPRI) — Officials in Tiverton are investigating after a body was discovered Friday behind a home on Furey Avenue.

Fire Chief Robert Lloyd told Eyewitness News the department received a call around 1 p.m. for a fire in the backyard of the home near the corner of Thomas Street.

“Our first arriving officer on this scene did find a car in this back yard that was fully involved in fire,” said Lloyd. “He did try to make an attempt to get the occupant of the vehicle out. He was unsuccessful and that person has expired.”

Lloyd said the victim’s identity is not being released at this time – and the area is being treated as a crime scene.

The chief said it does not appear the person was working on the car or that the car had crashed before the flames erupted.

Neighbor Amy Paulantonio, who lives across the street, said she saw the flames.

“I saw a blue car turn around across the street from my house here and head down Thomas Street,” she explained. “A few moments later there was [sic] flames coming out of the bushes over there and trees and really heavy dark smoke in the sky.”

Lloyd said the state fire marshal’s office is investigating and an autopsy will be conducted on the victim.

“We just need questions answered so that we can give answers to the families and find out what happened here,” he said.

Neighbors said an older couple lives in the home but officials will not say how the victim or the car are connected to the property.
