Providence police investigating video that shows officer using force

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) — The Providence Police Department said Thursday it will be launching a full investigation into a cell phone video that appears to show an officer using force.

The Public Safety Commissioner, Steven Pare, believes that the video is from an arrest that took place on May 23 outside a Whitman Street home.

According to a police report obtained by Eyewitness News, a woman told officers that she was followed home from a nightclub by two women who ran into her home and destroyed her living room.

The two women struggled with police officers upon their arrival. The report states that an officer was jumped on, hit, and bitten by one of the women.

Footage of the incident begins as an officer drags one woman down the stairs and appears to strike her.

“Any use of force is troubling when you see it,” said Pare. “But there’s a story that leads up and a story afterwards, and obviously we don’t have all those facts yet.”

Providence Mayor Elorza also issued a statement on the matter Thursday night.

“After seeing the video, I believe this matter warrants immediate review. I have directed my public safety commissioner and Chief of Police to fully investigate this incident.”
