PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) — Two workers were seriously injured after the second-floor ceiling and part of a wall collapsed in a building in Providence on Friday afternoon.

According to a Providence fire official, several men were inside the Kresge Building at 191 Westminster Street when the accident occurred. A worker was briefly trapped and both were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, Battalion Chief Jeffrey Verone confirmed.

“We had some workers that were doing some demolition work and part of the tile ceiling and wall came down and trapped one of them and injured two of the workers,” explained Verone.

buildingcollapse2A worker who was inside the building at the time told Eyewitness News that the two men suffered injuries to their chests and legs- and one seemed unable to walk.

“One of the injured was taken out of a window with the tower ladder and brought down using the bucket,” Verone added.

It was a 30 by 12-foot section of ceiling and wall that came tumbling down, he said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is now investigating and the building inspector is taking a look at the building.

The Massachusetts-based company that apparently contracted the workers had no comment on the incident.
