Damaging East Providence fire sends woman to hospital

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — An East Providence woman was taken to the hospital Friday morning after flames broke out inside her home.

The three-story home on South Blossom Street was heavily damaged. Flames and heavy smoke could be seen pouring out of windows on all three floors as firefighters arrived on scene at about 4:30 a.m.

“The cables to the house were sparking and the whole front of the house was just on fire,” said 16-year-old Rachel DiPietro, who lives in the home.

DiPietro said she was woken up by a crackling noise.

“My mom came in and told me to get of the house so I grabbed my dog and I looked over and I just saw my living room up in flames,” she recalled.

DiPietro’s mother was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. She said her mom alerted the upstairs tenant and he was able to make it out safely.

Two of their pets, a dog and a cat, did not make it out alive, according to DiPietro.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. A Rhode Island State Police K9 unit was on the scene checking for accelerants, but investigators have not specified if the fire is considered suspicious.
