Elderly woman killed in crash in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – An elderly woman died in a crash on Route 140 in New Bedford Friday afternoon.

According to State Police, it happened at about 3:15 just north of Exit 3.

A Volkswagen Jetta collided with a Toyota Avalon, causing the Toyota to spin out and strike the median guardrail.

The driver of the Avalon, 86 year-old Barbara May Pivo, was flown to Rhode Island Hospital by helicopter but later pronounced dead. The driver of the Volkswagen, a 27 year-old woman from New Bedford, was not hurt.

The crash is still under investigation by the Massachusetts State Police but no charges have been filed.
