State police investigating fatal rollover crash

NORTH PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rescue crews rushed to Route 146 in North Providence for a rollover crash that claimed the life of a 24-year-old woman.

It happened near the exit for Mineral Spring Avenue at about 1:35 a.m. Saturday morning.

State Police tell us that a Nissan was speeding while driving northbound, when it rear-ended another vehicle. The Nissan struck the center concrete barrier then rolled over and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected.

The unidentified victim was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver and three passengers in the BMW continued traveling north until coming to a stop in the breakdown lane. All of the people inside the BMW that was hit were wearing their seat belts and suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Parts of the highway there had to be shutdown for several hours as a result.

Police said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

This crash is still under investigation by the Rhode Island State Police Lincoln Woods Barracks, State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit, and Forensic Service Unit. State Police ask for anyone who witnessed the crash to contact State Police headquarters.
