NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A criminal complaint charging a 45-year-old man with the murder of his 19-year-old daughter was filed Monday, according to the Bristol County District Attorney’s office.
DA Thomas Quinn announced Walter DaSilva has been charged with murder, carrying an illegal firearm and unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in the death of his daughter, Sabrina DaSilva, of New Bedford.
DaSilva, formerly of Danbury, Conn., was arrested Friday afternoon by U.S. Marshals in Bridgeport, Conn., Quinn’s office said. He was arrested as a fugitive from justice on an outstanding warrant.
“I think it’s really, really bad that this community has to find out their own father did something like this to his own daughter. It’s just disturbing,” said Roday Forts of New Bedford. “I’m very glad that they caught this guy. I’m very glad there’s going to be some closure.”
The new charges against DaSilva allege that he shot his daughter multiple times on July 3 outside her home on Bedford Street. She was rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Family members say DaSilva was unloading groceries from her car when she was shot. They say her 2-year-old daughter will have to grow up without her mom.
“This homicide case is particularly chilling because it involves a father being accused of killing his own daughter,” Quinn said in a new release Monday. “We look forward to prosecuting this defendant in court for this very disturbing case.”
Mr. DaSilva appeared in court in Bridgeport on Monday and waived extradition, the DA’s office said. He will be returned to Bristol County for arraignment.
