New Bedford police seek suspects in pair of similar robberies

NEW BEDFORD, Mass (WPRI) – Police are looking for two suspects who committed a pair of robberies over the weekend.

The two incidents happened in a similar manner, according to New Bedford police: one suspect put the victim in a headlock while the other searched the pockets for cash.

The first happened on Friday morning, around 10:30 a.m. on Deane Street.

An 82-year-old man said he was robbed from behind.

A witness described the men as in their early 20s with short hair and light skin; one wearing a red shirt, the other, a white shirt.

“I’m just shocked that an 82-year-old man can’t just walk down the street and enjoy his waning years in life. That’s just terrible,” exclaimed New Bedford resident Douglas Richards when he heard about the robbery.

The second incident happened on Saturday night around 9 p.m. on North Front Street, about a half a mile away Deane Street.

A 29-year old man reports he was robbed in a similar fashion as the first victim.

He described the suspects as young and possibly Hispanic.

Anyone with information on the crimes is asked to call New Bedford Police Detective William Westgate at (508) 991-6300 ext. 79516 or leave an anonymous tip at (508) 99CRIME (27463).
