NEW SALEM, Mass. (WPRI) — A Newport man’s small plane was airlifted from a sandbar in the Quabbin Reservoir Wednesday, a day after the pilot said mechanical problems forced him to make an emergency landing.

Massachusetts State Police said Wednesday morning that they planned to meet with the FAA and NTSB, along with members of the state’s recreation and water departments, to discuss how to remove the plane from the reservoir. Hours later, it was airlifted from the sandbar.

WCVB in Boston said they spoke to the pilot, 42-year-old Guillaume De Ramel, by phone Tuesday. He said he was OK, and was still trying to figure out what went wrong with his plane.
De Ramel ran for Rhode Island Secretary of State in 2006 and again in 2014. He was not injured.

State police said they were still investigating the incident Wednesday, and had not ruled out charges against the pilot.
