BARRINGTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A 20 year-old-driver is facing DUI charges after a crash in Barrington Tuesday night.
Police say the driver, Dhavel Patel of Seekonk, was speeding on Sowams Road around 7:30 p.m. when he veered off the road, knocking down as sign and landing in the woods.
The impact of the crash was so strong, crews had to cut the branches and use a crane to pull the vehicle out.
Mike Zimmerman, who witnessed the crash, called 911.
“I immediately went over and asked if anyone needed help,” he said Zimmerman. “We moved a basketball hoop out of the way. The gentleman was able to get out of the car, but he kind of fell to the ground, so we moved him over to the white truck.”
Police say they found five empty beer bottles and an empty bottle of liqueur in the car.
“They really should be doing something about this drunk driving because it seems like it’s more and more happening,” added neighbor Mary Cappelli.
Patel is now charged with DUI first offense and DUI involving bodily injury.
Police said he and a female passenger had non-life threatening injuries, but a third person in the car who wasn’t wearing a seat belt is in critical condition at the hospital.
