EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – This week on the first half of Newsmakers: Steven Frias, the Republican candidate for state representative in Cranston’s District 15.
Frias agreed to appear to debate his primary opponent Shawna Lawton. Ms. Lawton declined the invitation to the debate, so Mr. Frias appears alone to discuss why he is running and what policy initiatives he’d pursue if elected.
On the second half of Newsmakers: the debate over whether to release documents – including grand jury materials – from the state’s 38 Studios criminal investigation. University of Connecticut journalism professor Mike Stanton outlines why the material should be unsealed, while Roger Williams University School of Law professor Niki Kuckes makes the argument for the importance of grand jury material remaining secret.
Stanton also briefly talks about the passing of former Providence Journal reporter W. Zachary “Bill” Malinowski and his recent front-page piece on what it was like to work with the highly respected journalist.
