Mother charged after baby left in unlocked car with engine running

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A 20-year-old Acushnet woman is being charged with reckless endangerment of a child under the age of 18 after an online video showed a baby left inside her unlocked vehicle with the engine running, according to New Bedford Police.

The video showed the car of Breanna McGrath parked at the Gas Express at Tarklin Hill Road and Belleville Ave in New Bedford on Thursday, September 1. McGrath was inside the convenience store while the baby was left alone for several minutes, according to the man who recorded the video.

According to police, the woman was charged but not arrested for leaving her 6-month-old baby boy in the car unattended. Police said she is cooperating with police.

The Massachusetts Department of Child and Family Services is letting the woman keep the child, police said.
