PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s environmental agency and the Arbor Day Foundation are giving away free trees.
The state Department of Environmental Management says it will give away 1,000 trees to homeowners as part of a program to help conserve energy.
DEM Director Janet Coit says the agency ran the same program last year, and all the trees were spoken for within the first 24 hours. Coit says trees are a great way to reduce utility expenses while promoting a healthier environment.
Registration for the program opens on Sept. 12. Trees may be picked up at specific farmers’ markets in October.
