NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Some residents of Narragansett told Eyewitness News Tropical Storm Hermine was one of the worst storms they had ever seen.
Many were out Tuesday picking up debris and clearing their yards of downed trees.
Caroline Cressman, who lives across the street from the water in Narragansett, said the scene on Monday was a scary one.
“It was frighteningly bad because the water was wild,” she said. “The waves were wild.”
Cressman said the wind was howling and the tropical storm force winds were generating huge waves.
“I was watching a boat sink out in that – and right now, you can see a portion of it sticking up,” she said.

That overturned boat was still tied to its mooring but likely has serious damage. Another boat, around the corner, broke free from its mooring and was resting on the rocks Tuesday afternoon.
Cressman said she feels bad about the boats but also feels thankful that the storm didn’t cause any major damage.
“Our land is dry,” she said. “The road is dry. This is wonderful that it stayed right at the bottom of the rocks.”
Local business impacts
Businesses near the coast were waiting to see if the storm would impact their holiday weekend sales – but many said Hermine actually drove people into their shops and restaurants.
“Preparing for it, I was getting a little bit nervous,” said Tracey Cugno of Shades and Pier Optical.
Cugno said the interest in the waves drove people to Narragansett and into her sunglasses shop.
“We actually matched last year’s numbers, which is great as a business person,” she said.
Right next door – at Oceanside At The Pier – it was a similar story.
“Especially with this kind of weather, you would assume it wouldn’t be,” said Stephanie Andrade. “But we were slammed.”
Local shop owners say September can be quite easy – and if another tropical storm comes by with big waves, it would only help.
