Fire destroys ocean-front home; investigators searching for cause

NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WPRI) — Investigators Tuesday returned to the scene of a fire that destroyed a multi-million dollar home on Ocean Road in Narragansett.

The fire broke out at the $3.1 million home Monday night. It took crews two hours to bring the flames – which were fanned by strong winds from the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine – under control. The fire was so intense, Narragansett Fire Capt. Gregg Anderson said firefighters were ordered to battle the flames from outside the building.

By Tuesday morning, the roof was gone and much of the second floor was destroyed as well. The state Fire Marshal’s Office told Eyewitness News crews were working to remove debris from the first-floor so they can investigate.narragansett ocean road fire

The Fire Marshal’s Office said investigators will be on scene all of Tuesday and maybe into Wednesday working to determine a cause.

The five-bedroom house is owned by the family of late Pawtucket Red Sox co-owner James Skeffington. Skeffington briefly owned the minor league team before his sudden death in May 2015.
