PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island man has been sentenced to prison for killing another man and setting fire to a shed with the body inside.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin says Matthew Gumkowski, formerly of West Warwick, was sentenced Tuesday in Providence Superior Court to life behind bars plus a consecutive 45 years.
A jury found Gumkowski guilty in June of first-degree murder and first-degree arson.
Prosecutors say the 34-year-old Gumkowski killed Michael DiRaimo on May 11, 2011, by slitting his throat. Gumkowski then set fire to a utility shed with DiRaimo’s body inside.
Prosecutors believe Gumkowski and the 42-year-old DiRaimo exchanged sex for drugs and DiRaimo had threatened to expose the relationship.
Gumkowski is already serving a life sentence for the July 2011 killing of 50-year-old Joseph Kilrow in Attleboro, Massachusetts.
