RIPTA adds bus trips for high school students

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Earlier start times at Providence’s Central and Classical High Schools this year have prompted RIPTA to add more bus trips for students.

In a news release Monday, RIPTA said buses will make two additional trips each morning from the city’s East Side to Central and Classical High School.

  1. Route 1 Northbound: Starts at the intersection of Hope and Olney Streets at 7:34 a.m. Makes stops on the east side of Hope St, then travels nonstop to Central/Classic campus. ETA 7:53 a.m.
  2. Route 1 Southbound: Starts at the intersection of Hope and Chace Streets at 7:21 a.m.. Makes stops on the west side of Hope St, and at Kennedy Plaza. ETA at Central/Classical 7:45 a.m.

RIPTA said the high schools’ earlier start times, which are also now closer together, have made scheduling buses for students challenging. The number of high school students using RIPTA to get to school went up last year, when the city reduced the “walk radius” for students from 2.5 to 2 miles.
