COVENTRY, R.I. (WPRI) — A severely malnourished golden retriever that was found abandoned in Coventry two weeks ago appears to be on the road to recovery.

In a Facebook post Thursday, Coventry Police announced that the dog — nicknamed “Lucky” — has gained approximately 10 pounds in 13 days.

Lucky was emaciated and severely dehydrated when he was rescued by police and animal control officers over Labor Day weekend.

The dog’s owner, 33-year-old Sean O’Leary, later turned himself to police. O’Leary is charged with two counts of unnecessary cruelty to animals and one count of failing to vaccinate the dog against rabies.

Coventry Animal Control will continue to care for Lucky. Once he’s back to his ideal weight and healthy, Lucky will be put up for adoption.
