Officer hurt, arrests made in Providence brawl

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A police officer was injured at the scene of a large disturbance in Providence Tuesday night.

According to police, a brawl broke out on Broad Street at about 7:30 p.m.

Approximately 25 officers responded to the scene.

Police said the officer injured his ankle as he was running after a suspect who reportedly had a gun. The officer, a member of the Violent Crimes Task Force, was released from Rhode Island hospital.

7 adults and 1 juvenile were taken into custody.

6 of the adults are facing disorderly conduct and obstructing justice charges. Police say one of the suspects, Andrew Brown, has been charged with carrying a pistol without a license. He is still in police custody.

According to police, several of the suspects will be arraigned in Providence District Court Wednesday morning, including Andrew Brown.

No other shots were fired and no other injuries have been reported.
