Cicilline introduces BABIES Act to US House of Representatives

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — US Representative David Cicilline is making an effort to help out parents of young children.

The House is expected to vote Wednesday on Cicilline’s BABIES Act — standing for Bathrooms Accessible for Babies In Every Situation.

The bill proposes that it be a requirement for all public bathrooms in federal buildings to have a diaper changing station. This includes both male and female restrooms.

Tuesday night, Cicilline expressed the need for this bill on the House floor:

“For example, in the office building where my office is located, Rayburn, there are no baby changing tables at all. That means that Rhode Islanders who come to visit my office have to try to find a changing station in another public building –or they’ll have to decide to change their baby on the bathroom floor, which is a terrible option. Unsanitary for both the parents and the children.”

If approved, all federal building would have two years to comply with the law.
