FOXBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — New England Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has been officially listed as “doubtful” for the team’s Thursday night matchup with the Houston Texans.
The third-year player was forced to make an early exit from his second career start on Sunday after taking a hard hit from Miami Dolphins linebacker Kiko Alonso. The injury was determined to be a sprained AC joint in his throwing shoulder.
It was Garoppolo’s second career start, filling in for Tom Brady as he carries out his Deflategate suspension. Prior to the injury, Garoppolo was 18 of 27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite losing their starter, the Patriots held on to secure the 31-24 victory with rookie QB Jacoby Brissett under center.
Garoppolo sat out practice on Monday and was limited on Tuesday. The Patriots released their official injury report Wednesday afternoon, which listed Garoppolo as doubtful for Week 3.
The team has not signed a free agent quarterback as a contingency plan. Brissett is expected to make the start against Houston, with WR Julian Edelman – who played quarterback at Kent State – slated as the team’s backup.
Listed in the injury report as questionable for Thursday’s game were TE Rob Gronkowski, LB Dont’a Hightower, LB Jonathan Freeny, G Jonathan Cooper, DL Trey Flowers, and CB Eric Rowe with various injuries.
